Hi there,
Hoping you can help.
My old boy has just bought himself a 2008 Ford Focus.
All fine, checks out OK. Serviced and MOT until next year.
I've asked him to check under car for signs of rust. Hes sent me some photos of quite a lot of rust along the rear axle and shock absorbers. Doesnt seem to have corroded but lots of rust.
Any thoughts?
Cant seem to post a link on here.

The underside of an 11 year old car will be rusty due to all the water / road salt. Not many average car owners seal the underside, only tends to be car fanatics.
Best off checking to see if there are holes.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -
Hes bought it now, its MOT'd, its 11 years old and that looks like fairly typical rusting of the underside of an 11 year old car, exposed to the elements daily.
Not sure what you expect to be able to do?0 -

Hey, thanks for reply.
Not too sure really. I've had company cars for years so haven't really had much e experience of rust for my sins.
Thanks though, bit more relaxed with him driving it.0 -

You could check the MOT history to see if there have been any advisories which might give you an indication of future costs, but other than that i'd say its fine (subject to not finding holes!)0 -
If planning to keep it for a few years it may be worth getting it waxoiled (other brands are available!).
May not be worthwhile though given it will cost a few hundred quid for a professional job.0 -
I got my 2005 Honda Jazz waxoiled by my local garage a year ago for about £60. Looked about the same state of corrosion as does the Focus in the photo. MOT due shortly ....we'll find out how it's doing then.0

The suspension looks fine. But if you look on the box section above it, just by where the torn-off tab of the exhaust heat shield is protruding from the wheel side of the exhaust, there's what might just be peeling paint, or might be the start of some proper rot. I'd be giving that a stern looking-at. The rest, though... It's an 11yo Focus. It ain't going to die of rot in the next year or three.0 -

That's the bit that caught my eye too. I'd be giving that a prod with a screwdriver so that it could be repaired now, if necessary, rather than being ten times worse at next year's MoT.0
