Cancel Direct debit

Hello to everyone, I've switched mobile provider today and would like to know if I can cancel the Direct Debit with my old provider. I had a virgin mobile sim only 30 days rolling contract and I've just switched to giffgaff. My old contract was refreshing on the 23rd of every month and I've paid the last bill on the 6th of August and I don't have any extra cost to pay to virgin as I used just my allowance. I've sent my PAC code to giffgaff and from today my old number is on the giffgaff sim and my old Virgin sim is not working anymore. So the question is: Can I cancel the direct debit with virgin now or I have to wait?

Thanks

I would not stop the DD because if you do/don't owe them money and they try to take some from your DD and its not there they will more then likely trash your credit history and the mark stays on there for about 7yrs so you will find it hard to get anything on credit.
If they take a over payment you can always try and get it back but once you credit file is trashed its hard to get the marks removed.

After the final bill has been settled.

Same here, just keep an eye on your bank for a bit. You always have option of the DD guarantee to suck back any money taken whilst you dispute it.
My bank cancels unused DDs after two years of non use anyway

Given the horror stories on here about mobile phone and companies placing black marks on your credit report - I would not personally cancel the direct debit.

Let Virgin mobile do that – they will collect what they are owed and then the direct debit will become dormant. Get them to do the work – your file will be closed and you can move onto enjoy your new provider.

+1 to what @Rich2808 says - just let the direct debit run its course. You'll generally get another bill a couple of weeks after the usual billing date so it could be up to even 6 weeks after using the PAC that the final DD is taken.

Remember the DD guarantee means it's easy to get your bank to withdraw a DD if there's a dispute.
