Don’t think an accountant can help now
I’ve paid all my taxes all my working life 20 odd years. Never claimed benefits. Make one mistake and they hammer you for 32k Joke right?

Yeah I resubmitted my returns to gain more I guess. I was in bother through personal circumstance. Obviously I don’t want to give them 20k when I know what they will spend it on. I did wrong I pay back what I took but to add 20k on it is a joke and send 3 letters a week
  • So you resubmitted once submitted that’s a major red flag. As it can show your cooking books word of advice get an accountant for future
  • I wouldn’t give them 20k let them take you to court judge would agree sensible payment plan

Bit much complaining the country is in such a state after submitting false details to get a bigger tax rebate. No wonder the penalty is so high - you knew exactly what you were doing. That's called theft 'mate'. You are lucky you are not facing prosecution

For a debt that size HMRC will seriously consider making you bankrupt " To protect the public purse " is the phrase they use.
If you pay the £20k and then commit to paying the balance over 18 months (and stick to it !) they would normally consider it.
If there is any part of the debt you agree with , my advice would be is to pay it as it shows to HMRC you want to settle this before it goes for enforcment action which will cost you more.
    HMRC`s enforcment options are :
    1) If you dont pay after demand letters/phone calls
    2) Refer to Field Force for someone to speak to you and ascertain your assets (if any) and agree a possible repayment arrangement
    3) If you have no assets or default an arrangment refer you for bankruptcy, HMRC rarely take people to the County Court to get a CCJ anymore.
However before we get to that stage go and see a properly qualified accountant (one with letters after their name) and get them to check HMRC`s figures to make sure they are right.
All the stuff you have written about where the money will be spent is irrelevant and lose the attitude by calling them idiots because if you called me an idiot when asking for help to pay any debt , you would find me doing the bare minimum to help you ! - after all you wouldnt appreciate HMRC calling you an idiot would you ?.
Its not the end by a long way, but how you respond will determine the result for you.

Committing fraud is not a mistake, in this case it's stealing from the taxpayer.

To make matters worse you are looking at ways to get out of paying it back by hiding the £20k. The £20k your relatives gave you in order to dig yourself out of the hole you dug. So if you do go bankrupt no doubt you will be handing this back to your relatives?
  • If they make him bankrupt that wouldn’t be protecting the public purse?

Because yes it would affect his credit status but if has no assets the amount it costs would further cost the public purse? To make someone bankrupt. There is no winners.
