what is the diff in horse carrots...?

went visitng me mam today, and on the way there is a fruit/veg shop..

where i buy my sacks of pots... £6.00 at mo.....

his fruit and veg is not really that much cheaper than the supermarkets

but he was selling big nets of carrots....i think they were poss 12kg

for £2.65..... when i asked about them he said they were horse carrots.... for feeding to horses....

the only thing i can think of they were chunky carrots.....or is there another reason ?

as i was thinking of buying a net of them and spending a day blanching:eek:

as will never go a miss in our house...

  • Hi hun i just found this on the web i hope it helps.

I'm going to be looking out for them from now on, what a bargain!

There is a carrot type for everyone. Horse carrots are big, irregularly shaped orange carrots, sometimes with splits in them. Horse carrots tend to be older and more fibrous, making them good for long cooking, as in soups or stews.
I will save my tesco £1 savings stamps this year! .......so far = £50 (full card#1)
Card #2 £6. I will not be skint at Chistmas this year!

    Total £56

I used to buy sacks of horse carrots, when I had a *hayburner*

The carrots tended to be the miss-shapes...usually candidates for Esther Rantzen and her gang. :rotfl:

They would often be broken, and sometimes the ends would be a little soggy. ;)

If I see a gang of orange people wandering about, I'll know it's the CoolTriker bunch. :D
