I guess so but then I don't think they would tried to roll out the system nationwide!

Seriously though I presume there are plenty other people with similar distances between meters who have both working correctly? Surely? Can anyone else with working smart meters confirm what sort of distances they have between them?

My SMETS2 meters are about 2.9m apart and in a cellar and the system works.

There is definitely an issue with some modern builds where the gas meter is housed outside the property in a low level box ,whilst the leccy meter is within the property. Quite a few tales recently of comms. difficulties.

Had this for around a year, ended up that my gas meter display started to blank out when reading it, so got a replacement and at the time the engineer binned the white smart display saying they were useless and replaced it with a black one and everything has worked fine since

So if anyone is interested this now appears to be resolved. I raised a complaint and then they suddenly seemed to get it working. Funny that! The IHD still wasn't showing the gas data but they did something remotely and that is now also working. Glad it is fixed but if these things worked the way they were supposed to out of the box it would save everyone a lot of time!
  • If energy companies did what they were supposed to do, never mind smart meters!
  • I had an EDF smart meter fitted about a year ago. Same problem here, I get my electricity readings just fine but nothing off the gas meter. Both the electricity and gas meter are in the same place (about 30cm apart!). I have even tried to leave the smart meter above the gas meter and still didn't connect. On top of everything, I get EDF visiting me every 6 months to read the gas meter!
  • I have been working with EDF to resolve the the gas meter problem since October 2019. The gas meter is only 74cm from the electricity meter that is sending readings regularly. They decommissioned my gas meter remotely and are unable to recommission the meter remotely. The latest communication from the complaints division is that the signal is not strong enough (that seems to be the stock answer for a large corporation failing its customers) and that I should take it up with the ombudsman service that is funded by the energy companies. I have submitted all communications to the ombudsman and am waiting. I cannot do what the government wants and save energy.

You don't need a smart meter to save energy, just turn down the thermostat a degree or two, switch off lights when not needed and don't leave things on standby !
In any case, the savings from smart meters are likely to be minute: £11 per year according to the parliamentary group.
There's nothing to stop you taking daily gas meter readings and working out how much you're spending: enter the volume readings into this site and you don't even have to do the sums.

It is now autumn 2022 and I have the same problem after having my EDF smart meters installed a month ago.  My meters are in cupboards at waist level on the outside of a 2005 build and right next to each other.  Electric smart meter transmits fine, gas is not showing anywhere.

I live in a hilly area on the edge of the Peak District outside Greater Manchester and one rumour I've heard from a neighbour with the same problem is that there have to be a certain minimum number of properties with smart meters in an area to make it 'worthwhile' or possible for this to work for gas meters.  Almost like a hub type thing with a minimum number or meters or households is required.  Not sure this makes a lot of sense, but clearly there is something different about how the gas meters work / connect so that so many of them are not connecting.  EDF customer service is in some far away place and pretty useless so far.

It was heartening to hear your problem eventually got sorted out, EH75!
The rest of us live in hope.
