after holiday 2 appliances dead, can i claim on contents?

has anyone actually claimed successfully for this sort of damage? I have full accidental contents insurance. I just dont want to spend £45 on an engineer only to find they still reject the claim.
You still haven't established what caused the loss, so no-one can tell you if they have successfully claimed.
HH insurance is a defined perils based policy, you have to prove to insurers a valid loss against one of the insured perils has occurred.0 -

You will experience increases in your insurance for the next few years if you claim plus the excess, so it’s border line whether an £800 claim is worth it.
Can I ask what you pay for your insurance?
Asking as it could be £200 or £1000 and that might affect the maths.
I would probably not bother but my home insurance is at the more expensive end of that range, so increases would be nominally larger.
There is a point at which it simply isn’t worth claiming with any insurance and for £800 I’m not sure. You’d need to do more detailed maths and possibly get quotes with and without the claim to see the difference.0 -
paying £377. and that's for everything turned on so to speak. home emergency accidental damage etc.
I know what you mean as my son broke a tablet and it was cheaper for me to fix it than claim. they still marked it on our file though.0 -

I think what I’d do is research the price of new item, check excess and check increase in premium.
You can check the increase by getting a quote with and without the claim and NCD, I’d do this for a close by but different address, false name, phone number and email. Some people have run into trouble doing this sort of thing with real details as your this information is used for fraud detection and you could later get asked about the claim if you tie it to your address.
Bear in mind the increase in premium might last a couple of years, but a lesser degree in years 2 and 3.
That should give you an idea.
Bear in mind that getting the report is hassle (someone will have to wait in for engineer) plus there’s a risk claim will be denied or increase could be larger than forecast.
Also could the tumble dryer be fixed for a lesser amount than getting a new one?0 -
I would pay £45 for someone to see what's wrong and give me and estimate for the repair.
Then would base my decision comparing the cost of the repair not the new replacement whether it's worth claiming on the insurance or not.
Even if you decide not to claim, you will have to pay some money to asses the damage, as repairing will most likely be cheaper than buying a replacement.0 -
Bear in mind insurance is new for old, so you get a new machine if you claim.
If you repair you will end up with a second hand machine that’s x years old.
If you replace you’ll get a new machine.
The value to compare therefore is the new value.0 -
Update.
After contacting policy expert again. They have now seemingly, after initially saying they don’t have anyone to asses the machine, got a company called bevalued. Yes I’ve read the reviews so not expecting this to go well.
They have instructed a local, 30 miles away, company that specialise in tv and video repair to come and asses what’s wrong and if it is repairable. Hmm. Next questions are:
1) can the insurer insist its repaired?
2) I thought new for old was new for old. If they press this can I counter with “only if they are a Siemens approved company” ?
3) how the !!!! is a video repair company going to figure out what wrong with a tumble dryer?
P.s. in reference to repairing it and not claiming. The new control board is £300 from Siemens uk, or 230 euros from Siemens Germany. Got a love being in the eu. And that’s without fitting.0 -
Miele should last 10 years at least... so you done the right thing deciding on appliance....
They are normally pretty good at in warranty repairs.... stick with meile and avoid insurance..... they are normally very, very good for honouring repairs for defects....0 -

Yeah did the whole candy zanussi thing. Then decided to stop wasting money.
The Miele has been fixed under the 10 year warranty it had. Alas the Siemens only had a five year warranty, but is now 9 years old.
As mentioned in original post, no misuse just bad luck with either a lightening strike near the house or power surge. Both appliances knocked out while away on holiday.0
