Upgraded BIOS from (Insyde)F.26 to F.29 and the damn SSD booted. Unless there's a dodgy connection (don't think so).
This is the first time I've needed to do a BIOS update to get a SSD to work (sample size not more than 10). Another beer...
EDIT: now doing an upgrade to 1903; I know a clean install would be better/quicker but I told neighbour it wouldn't look any different (and saves me tons of questions about why this/where's that...).
PS. the CPU in this laptop is shockingly bad (or its got another problem), AMD E1-1200.
EDIT2: I've just seen the CPU mark. Its 655. I should have said NO.
It's good that you said yes. That laptop is useless without an SSD. Though with that CPU, it really needs a clean install.
