How about cleaning it once in a while. If it's getting clogged with grease then you're not cleaning it properly and not replacing the filters as required.

Again, sounds like they've not been cleaned or in the case of paper filters replaced regularly.

This is one that is more prone to clogging up as they tend to recirculate rather than vent, especially when you don;t keep on top of cleaning the filters. The one at my parents hadn't been cleaned properly for years and is now next to useless. The kitchen cabinets and surfaces quickly succumb to a layer of grease even though they're cleaned fairly regularly.
