PPI just AWARDED but got default but over six years old

They certainly can.
Statute barred doesnt mean they are written off.
They are still owed, it just means you cant actually be taken to court

I will say I was never chased for the money as I lived overseas so couldn't make contact with me. Likely this was written off on internal systems?

For the purposes of a PPI complaint, any such outstanding debt can and will be offset against any redress awarded.

Only when you accept the redress will your complaint go to the Bank's Insolvency Team for checking.

Why not accept? They may miss your old debts. Hard to see what you've got to lose.
