Sometimes I come across sites (typically US-based) that have a block on anybody visiting from the EU; this saves them from having to invest resources into GDPR compliance. I knew a VPN would get me around this but I never bothered because I assumed some cost would be involved.
However I just discovered that Opera now provides its own VPN for free, and access to it is built into the browser.
To enable the VPN choose settings form the menu then Advanced -> Privacy and Security, and scroll down to the VPN section. Once it's active you can click the little VPN logo in the address bar and choose "Americas" as the location. Page loading will be slower, but you will get access to sites that would otherwise be blocked, and it's easy to disable/re-enable as required.

Built-in VPN and ad blocking have long been among Opera's main selling points. The ad blocker is also very effective and seems to be derived from uBlock Origin.0

After a bit more research it seems that Opera's VPN should be considered more of a proxy than a full-on VPN, but it still it works great for stuff like the above.0

I keep Epic browser for sites that require me to switch proxy.
leave Opera as my day to day browser.0 -
I'd personally be careful about using free VPN/proxy services - since all your web traffic will go through them, they can see EVERYTHING you are doing online. They will then likely sell that information on to keep their service free to use. Not the best option if you are security/privacy focused. But for a quick flick to a US site (which to be fair, probably has all records saved by the US government anyway...) it'll get the job done0

+1 for epic privacy browser.
Even with a vpn, some sites seem to be blocked like P?...bay, and it is not the dns, but there are still other ways.
Praisethesun, they will see to where you connect, but thanks to https do not think they will see much after that. They will know that you contact google, but not see what you type in or the results that you get.0 -
A third vote for Epic. Opera really isn't reliable as a full VPN.0

Unfortunately, Epic is only available for PC/Mac. Any other suggestions?David.0

Epic apparently works under wine too
then there is tor - not the best for music or video
the best by far, and you can do virtually anything, and is free and fast (but YOU have to choose the correct enpoint, same as every vpn), they keep logs.etc - not private, https://www.vpngate.net/en/about_overview.aspx0 -
