Presumably University work is (in theory) bucket load of typing for a Thesis or dissertation or something that involves Word. You don't need a lot of power for that.

If you was going to try and game on it, the i7 could be beneficial over the i5. But if you're not, stay with the i5. You could probably even drop to an i3 with an SSD.

Would the i7 not be better for presentations?

Nothing you've said in this thread has convinced me that you even need an i5 let alone an i7...

Also I could interject here with "death by Powerpoint presentation" discussion but I won't...

Are you looking at the two MateBooks on Amazon right now, currently priced at £743.07 and £924.68? If so, then the i7 also has a larger (512GB) SSD than the i5 (256GB).

I really think that the i5 will be sufficient. i7 processors are more for gamers and encoding videos. My own i5 copes very well with the demands that I place on it. In fact I probably expect too much from it sometimes, but I can deal with waiting for a few more minutes.

If storage is important and you expect them to use a lot of it, you could just buy a USB stick. You can certainly get a 256GB one for a lot less than the ~£180 price difference.

One more thing we should perhaps know and that is what will the course be and what will the laptop be doing? If they're doing video editing with the likes of Adobe Premiere, then the i7 would definitely be the smarter choice with more storage and better CPU.

I’m not looking at them I just got the message. They are a medical student.

Then I imagine that the i5 would be sufficient for their needs, unless they know in advance of any software that requires an i7 processor as a minimum requirement.

With the latest Ryzen CPU's i would not opt for an i5 or i7.

We're talking about a laptop than has a choice of 2 Intel CPUs, so bringing up AMD Ryzen desktop CPUs isn't relevant.

If the person you are buying the laptop for is going to be doing video editing, of playing games often then the i7 is worth the extra money.

But if they aren't doing either of those things, frequently, then there won't be any advantage.

Lower power and more cores for less money?

The intels run much cooler and in a laptop where there is limited airflow and everything is tight together i'll happily pay a bit more for an intel with the current standing. Desktop Ryzens processors are sweet though.

Not delved into the full specs of the laptop CPU's but the 2500U shows a TPD of 25w.

Not seen true figures on that though. Similar to some of the Intels where they state a TDP of 95watts yet it actually pulls 147watts under load.

Thats where good online reviews helps or maybe crossing your fingers.

My desktop R1700 runs very cool, original H100i cooler its just 5 degrees over ambient.

Cant see cooling being an issue with a laptop CPU.

    OP said this:
    It's a Huawei matebook 13

Does it come with AMD Ryzen CPUs?
