Why don't we see much this kind of shutter? In theory, they help both security and insulation if one has large glass doors at the rear of the house.
We are thinking of getting one install. But not sure if there is any particular reason we don't see them as often as in Europe.

The very idea of these frightens me witless but then I have survived a house fire.
Electrically operated and the cause of the fire is an electrical wiring failure? How are you going to get out - it's not like sweeping aside the curtains, is it?
Why not ask your local Fire Brigade for advice as it exactly this kind of thing they are clued up about.0 -
I can't think of anything worse.
Is it much more secure? I don't imagine a PVC shutter will keep out a determined criminal any more than normal windows and doors.0 -
Hideous springs to mind. They look like units in an industrial site.0

Ideal for that 'off-licence after hours' effect.0

Fortunately, I don't live in a place where people find a need for security shutters. Indeed, some people around here, especially the old, are very lax about locking doors.
As for insulation, I don't think I'll live long enough now to have a chance of encouraging pay-back from the projected 'savings.'0 -

Stayed in a house in germany in my teens that had these during school exchange. You couldn't see them from outside when they weren't in place, they were great for keeping the room cool when it was extremely hot outside, a bit like wooden shutters on the continent. I expect we don't see them as much because of cost of install, different house design and us not getting enough not weather to make them cost effective compared to things like thick curtains. Plantation shutter are probably more effective and don't make your house look like a closed shop from the outside.
I did like the shutters, just wouldn't have them on my house. Wooden plantation shutters, if done DIY, are about £300 per window and easy to install, so go that route if you're wanting mind insulation and privacy.0 -
In southern Europe they are used to keep the place cool. Not only by keeping the sun out, but by enabling windows to be kept open as the windows open inwards.
There was one house near us which had them and I think the various descriptions used to describe the appearance were all pretty fair. When the house was sold all those shutters were removed.0 -
Our neighbours had one of these about 25+ years ago; they were robbed while they were on holiday as it was just prised off enough for them to get in.0
