Icelandair cancellation advice

Options
Hi all, thanks in advance for any advice you can give, just hoping to work out where I stand.

We were due to fly to Chicago on Thursday July 18th with a 1 hour stop over in Reykjavik. 16 days before we were due to fly, July 2nd, I was contacted by our travel agent who told me the flight was cancelled and we instead had to fly on Monday 15th July, 3 whole days before our original booking was due to depart.

This was obviously highly unacceptable, we both have full time jobs and would have had to pay for three more days accommodation and spends. This arrangement was just completely unacceptable and to be honest quite absurd. After days of wrangling and very stressful conversations with travel agent/Icelandair the best option they had for us was to fly to Reykjavik on the evening of Wednesday 17th, from Heathrow instead of Gatwick, staying overnight and the onward flight to Chicago on the Thursday as originally booked.

I suppose I have a few issues, it would be good to get advice on whether we'd be entitled to any compensation, and if so in what region should we be looking at.

  • Having to fly 16 hours earlier than booked, both of us having to take an extra half day off work.
  • Having to travel from Gatwick to Heathrow to collect our car upon return due change of airport.
  • When speaking with Icelandair they told me that the flight had been cancelled on June 12th, they didn't inform me till July 2nd.
  • I logged my complaint on July 4th and I have heard absolutely nothing from them, even though I have chased twice since.
I want to escalate to the CAA but from what I have read I cannot do this until 8 weeks after my initial complaint.

I was hoping somebody on here could advise where I stand and what my best approach should be?

Thanks in advance!

were you offered a refund as an alternative?
I am guessing you were not checking your booking regularly on the airline website if you did not notice the cancellation and the TA informed you more than 14 days in advance so there may be no compensation due.
who paid for the hotel in Reykjavik?
Was it a real travel agent you used or an online ticket seller?

Unfortunately you will probably not be due any compensation due to the cancelllation element as you were informed more than 14 dyas before the flight.
You had a right to re-routing which clearly you had to fight for, which shouldn't have been the casse.
Would alteernative airlines given you flight times similar to your original? If sso, you should have been offered this/fought for this. A point for future reference.
You really should be compensated for the additional travel costs between Gatwick and Heathrow.
