Odd how so many who claim to not trust Microsoft, use it.
As for AV it all depends on which tester you use and how they test.
Use in the real world? No virus received here while using it, or, come to that any other AV over the years.
I guess common sense is the best AV in the end.

Agreed. There is no substitute for common sense.
The trouble is that common sense is not so common :)

As I understood it, there are only a handful of virus signature databases, the numerous brands of AV share these so the main difference between brands is the user interface.

I had to do some pentesting at work. This involved using a powershell script. the script itself just listed vulnerabilities and did not compromise anything. I left a zipped copy on my usb stick and when i plugged it back in some months later (did not open the zip) the scanner found the zip, the org got alerted, the national body of the org, got alerted and I had a few extra emails to answer that day too.

I took defender off at home, because it was too thorough for my devious needs, and went with the more compliant Avira

Avira does effect the downloading services I use and had to white list the apps

And their “add ons”, which may be useful. If you have a few computers in your household the cost is around £7 per computer per year, for a 5 installation purchase (Bitdefender 2020).

I remember finding BBC iPlayer impossibly stuttery on a relatives brand new PC, found Avast preinstalled hogging CPU, removed, enabled MS Security Essentials (free) streaming now smooth.

I'm using Windows Defender on my laptop, running W10, and it regularly says it needs updating. Tick the update box, goes to updating page, click update, and dots appear, but also the word Dismiss.

But it apparently doesn't update, because it appears again in a few days. Does it need updating or not?
