What exactly do I need to do for not to miss a PPI deadline?

A year ago I sent template letters to my bank, credit card provider and mortgage provider asking do I have any PPI?. Some responded that I never had PPI (should I trust them?), other sent me a longest ever form to fill before they can respond in hope that I would never get round to fill it (yep, it worked, I never filled it). Another one responded "we identified your accounts, now please write to our PPI team to that address". I understand I missed a 6 months deadline to complain to an ombudsman.
Questions:
1. What do I do now in the remaining few weeks to PPI dedaline?
2. What exactly this deadline is for? For a first letter, or a letter to ombudsman?
3. Should I just send them same letters, get fresh fob-off responses (surely after the deadline) and them refer them to ombudsman?

Make initial contact re a claim, which you've already done. The deadline isn't really a deadline, some banks are so overwhelmed currently with new claims the process will be continuing long after August 29th.0

It's very much a deadline! Put a complaint in on the 30th and it will be rejected.0 -

You've already have had your 'bite' at the PPI money tree and chose not to respond to their replies...you've failed..THE END!0 -
You have until the 29th August 2019 to file a complaint with your lender.
Complaints received after this date will be rejected as they will be out of time.
The FCA has advertised this deadline widely on tv and social media so
I suggest you act very quickly if you want to make a complaint.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Its really simple. Raise your complaint before the deadline. Not after. It may take them weeks or months to deal with it but as long as you have raised it before the deadline then you are fine.0

It's not a claim, it's a complaint...how often does it have to be said before it sinks in. Feel free to wait until after the 29/8 before lodging your complaint...you will be disappointed.0 -

E-mail, write, go to the bank in question in person and complain, the ways of communication are not limited to a phone call.
The deadline is a deadline...that's the point of them.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0
