Should feel very familiar to OP then, as they come from Wales.
    Portuguese rain is warmer...

Yes, the annual rainfall in northern Portugal is higher than South Wales (1200mm vs 1000mm). But so's the temperature (14deg vs 10deg). It's also much less evenly distributed - heavy rain in the winter months, dry in the summer, vs even across the year.

It's easy to forget how flat our climate is here - we don't really get seasons, compared to most of the continent.
  • As you no longer live in this country OP (though why you would leave such a beautiful place just because we have decided to leave the eu I have no idea) you could take some slightly drastic measures.

You say he works high up in insurance, do you know what company? If not, if he is high up it would not be difficult to find out which company.

I know what I would do, I would write to the ceo of the company and tell him/her exactly what happened, that you were incentivised to sell your house to this chap by the improper offer of more money "under the table" and this person has reneged on the offer.

I would not feel bad about this because anyone that is dishonest in something like a house sale would not think twice about being dishonest in his workplace.

as honest people we don't expect others to lie and deceive.

Except that you were quite happy to lie and deceive your solicitor and HMRC about the real price you agreed for the house?

Similarly you are complaining your eventual buyers didn't honour their agreement with you but as soon as a bribe was waved in your face you were quite happy to break your agreement with the other buyers.
I think karma relates to someone doing something bad/wrong and getting repaid several times over.

Um, no. You did the dirty on your other buyers, the solicitor and HMRC and subsequently the eventual buyers did the dirty on you. To many people that's exactly what Karma is.

This isn't meant to be nasty by the way, just an observation that you do seem to be in denial that you did anything wrong.

This is an extremely bad idea. It would be blackmail - pure and simple.

If the Op did this, the Op could get prosecuted for harassment under The Protection From Harassment Act 1997, and could also get sued for defamation.
  • Hi,

I think where OP has gone wrong is bringing it here and making it public.

If she had got the £3 grand 'bung' we wouldn't know the story and missed all the fun.

Anyhow she's going to be butt naked in the Portuguese sun and enjoy life.

Wonder how she would feel if she was wanting to buy a wonderful family home and get done for a £3 grand bung.

Not blackmail. Not saying OP should threaten to do it, just saying they should inform the buyer's employer of dishonesty. Not harassment either. Not sure about the defamation, it would be OPs word against the buyer's.

Don't be daft. The CEO is not going to be interested in the personal house-buying affairs of their employees, and anybody senior enough for the CEO to know them is going to be paying more than £215k for their house.

If someone wrote to me about an employees private financial matters I would think they were unhinged. Additionally it is the letter writing still pursuing the under the table money. The employee could easily say they realised it was dishonest thus decided against making the payment. I dont think it would be harmful to the person who made the offer as they can easily say the other person is an oddball, etc etc.

The whole idea of telling the employer is silly.

The OP got shafted and wish I could tell the original buyer they shafted at what happened as it might make them feel a bit better...

Op morally I think you got what you deserved , nothing more and nothing less....time to move on
