Paying motorway tolls for Portugal

We visited Portugal last month and hired a car from Interrent through AutoEurope. The rental company offered us the rental of an electronic motorway toll tag, but as I knew nothing about this system (and there had been no information about it in advance) it sounded like one of the extras that the car rental business are notorious for, so I declined it. Mistake! It appears the only way to pay these tolls for a Portuguese-registered car is at a Post Office (CTT), at least 48 hours after the toll was incurred - and we picked up some tolls driving back to the airport. The car rental company were not helpful at the point of return, and just said that eventually I would get a fine from the transport department (and no doubt a service charge from them as well). It appears that there is no way of paying these fines online. Does anyone have any experience of how to solve this conundrum?

Find a way to pay the tolls, plus fines, plus Rental Company charges. (i suspect that the Car Rental company will raise an invoice for the whole amount and take it from the CC that you used to make the booking).
    Put it down to experience.

Move on and put it down to experience.
  • In general, for each fine you get from the authorities in Portugal (traffic violation, parking ticket, tolls...etc) you will have to pay a administration fee with the car rental supplier.
The fines will be handled by the car rental supplier and they will deduct money from your deposit or directly from your credit card + the admin fees.
You should receive by post the fines you've got, but the easiest way to solve the problem is to contact AE customer service and they will help with getting all the invoices for the fines and the final invoice from the rental company.

The electronic device (i think is called via verde) for paying the tolls is the best solution: you pay a small fee/day for renting it but it handles all the tolls for you. At the end of the rental, these money will be charged from your credit card.

    I hope this helps :)
