Trying to haggle / cancel Sky broadband

Fibre connections for any VDSL provider are all managed by BT Openreach so it doesn't really matter who your provider is unless you want specific features that that provider offers. So ultimately even through I have a TalkTalk Fibre line the management of the line is via Openzone. I would be very hesitant to move to normal ADSL with TalkTalk however as they manage their own lines and have read some horror stories. However, I can't really complain at the moment as my line is now over 60mbps and increasing and it's costing me £20 per month. One of the reasons I wanted to leave Sky is that they make it very difficult to use your own router with service and I wanted to use Netgear Orbi.

    Not true nowadays.

They do make it very difficult because I did it myself. You have to extract the Option 60 and 61 data from the Sky router (which isn't straight forward) and then find a model that offers the functionality of adding this to the configuration. It is not plug and play - it's possible but not easy!

It changed awhile back, if you google it you can just put a generic email address in (can't remember the format) and anything for the password. It does have to be a router that supports a certain standard though (again, can't remember the specifics).

That's really good to hear. I remember it being a hassle and at one point it was in their T&C that you couldn't use your own router - but I read they were made to change it.

It would be good to just be able to plug and play a router in (something that has also been difficult with TalkTalk too). I can see why it's easier for ISPs to have everyone on the same router but it's not great if you like to manage your own home network!

Sorry to slightly hijack the thread, but I've decided to switch from Sky to Now Broadband as the retention deal Sky was offering was £20.50 a month for basic broadband and free weekend and evening calls, but Now are doing £18 for basic broadband and free anytime. As my 12 month contract with Sky is ending tomorrow and I made the switch today, with a go live date of 3 Sep, I assume there will be no exit fee? As in the exit fee should apply when the supply ceases, not when you request to leave?

I finally got through to a Brit at Sky but they would not ever talk about haggling - the lady said that they have a policy of never haggling... which is nonsense as they have haggled with me in the past... and have also kept ringing me up to haggle after I have cancelled in the past....

So about to pull the string and go to plusnet.

This is the same resistance I came up against. TalkTalk currently have an offer through uSwitch for their fastest fibre (up to 78Mbps) for £22.50.
