I just had a look and it says M³, which I believe is cubic metres?

So the gas meter is actually outside and we did question it as it has different flat number on it, which isn't ours but the serial number of the gas meter does match and the agency did say that it is mislabelled do to go by the serial number. Hope that makes sense.

It means you're probably paying for the local laundrette !! Or your landlord's penthouse.wow.gif

Switch your gas supply off inside the flat if you can, or at least stop using the boiler and cooker for a few days. Read all the gas meters and find the one whose reading doesn't change. That'll probably be yours.

M³ is cubic meters. When you get a bill (and have found the right meter), make sure they've using the metric calculation.

Good idea! We will do that, we're away for the weekend as well so will switch everything off and see what it is when we come back.

Yeah I will enquire about the metric calculation. Thanks so much for the advise!

"0058991 on the 16th of June, according to paperwork from the letting agency and we moved in on the 2nd of July, so I know it was 100% our fault for not checking ourselves straight after moving in ... and then 0060192 "

As above ignore the numbers after the decimal point to give 00589 and 00601 ie 12 units - multiply by 11.2 approx to give 134 kwh
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

If there's a stopcock associated with the meter that's allegedly for your flat, turn it off and see whether your cooker still works...

So the start reading was 0058991 on the 16th of June, according to paperwork from the letting agency and we moved in on the 2nd of July, so I know it was 100% our fault for not checking ourselves straight after moving in ... and then 0060192 on the 2nd of August (that's when we've been told that it was way too high and asked to submit a reading in a week's time), which currently today was 0060447.

In terms of unit price it is 4.12p and standing charge is 26.51p.

I'm not able to tell you the exact amount we had on the bill as it was online and was just above £500 for July

So, 134 kwh @ 4.12p is only £5.52 add dsc and 5% vat, be less than £20, where does the 'over £500' come from?

Are you being billed for previous tenant arrears?

Well that's what I'm unsure about as well. We submit our readings online and are provided with five spaces for the digits, however each time we tried to submit online we were unable to as it was saying that the use is too high and we had to go through the customer services to get that updated and even then they turned around and said it is too high and there is a dispute ongoing now and they cancelled our bill until is resolved. With saying that I gave them the exact number as I did on here so surely they would come to the same conclusion as you in terms of usage and amount?

Definitely not being billed for precious tenants as we have checked that. Thanks for the suggestion though!
