My son(18) bought a mobile sony ericcson w850i from argos in July the bottom bit where the charger goes is corroded(sp) i rang up argos (2 weeks ago) and they said they will send it off for repair if they cant repair then they will replace so he took it in

Anyway got a phone call yesterday saying they can repair it but we will have to pay as its liquid damage and its not covered on the warranty

I said my son uses the phone for a walkman its kept here all the time how can it be liquid damage
She said condensation or something like that i said his last phone was 4 years old and never had a problem plus we have several mobiles here and this has never happened before

The SA in argos said when i took the phone in said it looks like the battery has leaked:confused:

i have spoken to CS they said they cant over ride the store and my argos store are saying they cant do anything about it as its the engineers report and so we have to pay

Does anybody know what i can do

Thanks

the repair centre doesn't get pain from the manufacturer for looking at the phone so they actually do need to repair them to make any money!!!! i'm sorry loopy but if they say it's liquid damage, it usually is and you can often see this on the battery. if the battery has leaked causing the liquid damage then that's a different story, although you will need an engineers report to prove this, i should imagine.

I really cant see how a mobile phone only 4 months old can get liquid damage if it didnt take it out what causes it if its not the battery

If it is the battery leaking causing the liquid damage then what do i do

we have never had a problem like this before

They have sent it away and have a report and they just told me its liquid damage didnt say the cause

using it in the rain, condensation, all sorts of things can cause liquid damage. if it's a leaking battery i would have thought it would be quite visable, not sure of that though. you could contact the repair centre direct and ask them to look at it. however, can you really be sure you're son hasn't spilt a drink over it or dropped it etc? no offence intended, but i've had customers swear that their kids havent done anything and when i've opened the phone water has literally dripped out of it!!!!!

There is no quick way to get satisfaction when a retailer states that you have caused the damage yourself.

You need to wite to their head office and then progress your complaint until you seek a resolution that is good for you.
Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.
  • If i was you i would get a quote from another repair centre, if they say the same then you really haven't got a hope of them repairing it. I believe the CPW do a repair service and you don't pay for a quote - but you must get it in writing.

there is a little white sticker on the top of the battery. if it is red then that means the battery has been liquid damaged

there is also one on the phone just under the sim card slot. if it is red then that means its been liquid damaged (it should be white)

if you need any help on finding the stickers, i do have a picture that i can show you

Thanks i will pick up the phone tommorow as i had a phone call earlier saying they cant repair it and are not going to replace so it looks like it will have to do with keeping that one as it was working fine it was just that he mentioned to me about it being coroded at the bottom so i said it shouldnt be like that especially with a new phone

i do hope it still is working ok

I can understand what you mean but my son hardly text/ring phone is always kept here and when his listening to his music on it its either living room or his bedroom and i dont allow drinks in either of these rooms (only adults and i know he is but he chooses not to as he doesnt drink tea or coffee only cold drinks)

but it looks as though he hasnt got any choice but to use that phone until he can afford another one

    thanks anyway
