Can PPI be found just using the car registration number?

IN about 2000, I bought a car on finance from a garage who is no longer there. I can't remember who the finance was with and I have no paper records. Someone told me (so here comes the dodgy bit) you can find out who the car was financed with just using the registration number. I can remember that!!! Is it true though? Or do I have to speculatively send off letters to every car finance company I can think of? My Experian report does not go back far enough either!
Thanks in advance.

Car dealers were not regulated prior to 2005 and if the dealer has ceased to trade you have no one to complain to anyhow.

Ok similar situation with car finance from 2004:
No paperwork :-(
I have name and address of company (Sunwin Services Group) who I bought the car from and would have arranged finance (and yes Gap Insurance); unfortunately the company no longer exists, although may have been bought by Bristol Street Motors in 2008.
Any thoughts on if it is worth going anywhere with it?
And do I direct it at Bristol Street Motors, or another company?

Same answer as above.......2004 is before 2005 so give up.0

Gap insurance is not PPI and is still sold to this day.0

I know, just highlighting my financial naivety at that point - for both PPI and Gap Insurance.
Sent a query to financial ombudsman about - not expecting a positive response.
Thanks anyway everyone 😁0 -

Well, that will be one of the easiest cases for them to look at and hand back. The FOS can only look at sales made by regulated companies. Not unregulated companies at the point of sale. 2004 is before 2005 as had been stated on this thread a number of times.0 -
And as the company no longer exists to complain to, even easier.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0
