Get a fit note from your doctor for the rest of the notice period

Then remind them that the law requires them to pay the last week of notice in full even if off sick.
(Unless their contractual Notice to you excludes it by being longer than statutory which it might be as you have 4 weeks, but they may not know that. )

I don't think company is unusually harsh. Im not saying its 'not harsh' but its not unusual. I got 2 days paid when my grandad died, and that included the day of the funeral, so I got the day I found out, and then a day for the funeral.

For me, working took my mind off things and I wasnt in charge of arranging a funeral, but the law doesn't take into account that, probably because sadly it is too open to abuse.

See your GP and ask them to sign you off. Bereavement related stress is they normal reason, and I would expect any decent GP to agree in your particular circumstances.

Even the Civil Service are not particularly generous regarding bereavement leave, i think for an uncle it would be just the one day to attend the funeral.

Your employer may not be particularly co-operative, but not unnecessarily harsh.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I’ve had this from HR in the last few minutes

“We wish you to fulfil the obligations of your contract with the company”

Am I still fulfilling my obligation if I am signed off unfit to work?

I would expect so - it might seem bizarre but maybe they mean, once you’re better/ sorted the funeral, come back and serve the remainder of your notice?

I’ve already told them we haven’t even had the inquest yet never mind begun funeral arrangements. We were advised chances of the funeral happening before b/h are slim.

I could understand this if I was going back to work for them

    Yes.
    Get a sick note.
When you see the GP focus on the stress this is causing you (the GP can only give you a sick note for yourself, not to help your family).

I think they are being ridiculous under circumstances.
It doesn’t make sense to make someone go to work.

They are showing no loyalty to you so you have nothing to feel guilty about.
