Even with rechargables it will still "eat" batteries, Olympus are the same 2 AAs is just not enough, especially if the lens goes in and out when you switch on even fully chargedNi-Mh dont last long, and they need to be freshly charged, not charged and left in a drawer.
When the camera says batteries are flat, they will still work, in say a vibrator, quiet well, its just the can only use say the top 10% of power, after that they just give up.

Whats the point in the digital camera then if you can only use the camera for a short while

Only poor cameras that use AA batteries. Decent digital cameras last ages (I'm surprised they even still make any that don't use lithium ion batteries at least). I've been using mine a bit and I can't remember the last time it needed recharging.

  • Don't go down the cheap rechargables route! they will only last 10 minutes too! You need the correct battery for your camera which I linked to earlier, £20 may sound a lot, but it's the only way your going to be able to get a days use out of your camera, the AA option is just a "limp home" option that lets you take a few more pictures if your main battery has gone flat, don't try to take the cheap option, if you do you will be back in here asking "why" questions.

A good microprocessor controlled charger is just as important as the rechargeable batteries to get the best life in your camera. Don't waste your money on a Samsung branded battery above, it's only 2500mAh capacity at a rip off price and you would still need to buy a good charger!

A good quality charger and four 2500mAh NiMh batteries is available here for much less. They also sell four 2800mAh NiMh bateries here which have a bit more capacity.

Ok I bought the Uniross 1 hour charger and 2700 rechargable batteries, charged them yesterday and today the battery was low again, so they don't really last that much longer then Alkaline ones. I take it you have to charge them and use them the same day to have an all day usage in the camera?
