PPI - Store Cards

Options
Hi

In 1987, I was work part time on a years contract. I signed up for a Top Man/Burtons Store Card, which had a upper limit of £225.00, they sold me insurance, which they said I could claim on the insurance when my contract ended. I could not claim on the insurance, because I knew it was a year contract. It took me 4 years to pay it off.

It is 32 years and I have no documentation to show that I had the store card.

The question is - Can I claim on this and how do I go about it for free?

well, the only way to know is to try. I heard today from Santander that they have found I had PPI on a "credit card" I took out in 1998. So not quite as old as yours, but pretty old.

Given that I have never had a Santander credit card but they now are responsible for a load of store cards (I think including Top Man) i can only guess this was a buy now pay later deal I took to buy a washing machine from Comet. I have no documentation or anything, Santander have just found this information from somewhere, so if I were you I'd contact Santander and ask them if they have anything relating to your name and address.

1998 is almost as old as 1987. Not.

Regardless of them finding your account, have they agreed to refund you?

    What's your point?

My point is a/ yes, banks DO have records that go WAY back beyond what us mere mortals have kept so they can and will find long dormant accounts b/ Storecards are mostly Santander's problem now so that's a good place to start.

I haven't actually submitted the complaint yet so I don't know if they'll refund me but what has anyone (other than the bank) got to lose by me or anyone else requesting information and then complaining?

It's free to ask, free to complain, if it comes to nothing you lose nothing, but if you get a refund, you get a refund. It's a pretty simple equation! :rotfl:

An account from 32 years ago is not even in the same ballpark as yours from 21 I'm afraid.

Many account records are deleted in as little as six years.

With no documentation from his own archive, the OP of this thread will very much buck the trend if anything but the most basic records of his finance still exist. In fact, I fully expect there to be nothing at all.

That's why I asked whether you had had a refund. Locating an account is not the same as having comprehensive records of what insurance was held and how much was paid.

The OP is, of course, free to ask if there are records but should expect nothing to avoid disappointment.

Phone Santander PPI helpline and ask them to conduct a search of their systems. They found my store card from 1989 because the underwriter still had records of the PPI premiums I had paid. If Santander find something useful log a complaint.

Don't phone, use the Santander PPI online enquiry/complaints form. Don't Pi55 about by phoning.

An initial phone call enquiry will provide an immediate response, an online enquiry will not. This late in the day, I'd say that was of paramount importance..
