Car Hire Problem - Beware Goldcar

I had a very bad experience renting a car from Goldcar in Gran Canaria in April. I pre-booked the vehicle and picked it up at the airport. The agent told me that they’d need to pre-charge me for a full tank of petrol. I said I didn’t want to pay in advance because I wasn’t even sure if I’d use a full tank. He said if I returned it with a full tank I’d receive a refund of €71. When leaving the airport I noticed that the tank wasn’t even full. It was missing a more than 1/8 of a tank of petrol. I took a photo as proof of evidence. I also returned the vehicle with a full tank and took a photo. When I got in touch with them because the refund didn’t come through, I explained the situation and send the photos. I noted that I was actually due around €80 since more than 1/8 of a tank of petrol was missing. Despite numerous follow up emails and a phone call, they ignored me. I complained to Halifax Mastercard, and they investigated further. Goldcar still refuted my claims, and I pushed back on Halifax and said I’d lodge a complaint with the Financial Ombudsman. Eventually Halifax refunded me, but of course, this just means Goldcar got away with it. I’ll never use Goldcar again, and I’d warn anyone renting a vehicle from them to beware of terrible customer service and dishonest business conduct.

Tell Halifax MasterCard that you’re going to stop using the card.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

With a bit of research on this site you would have discovered that Goldcar has a reputation of being one of the worst car rental companies around and should be avoided at all costs.
Regrettably, Ryanair frequently use them in their flight/car rental packages and unsuspecting customers only find out that they have been well and truly stitched up when they arrive at their destination.
Just to let you know that "Interrent" are just as bad should you be so inclined to try out an alternative without doing your research first.
You were lucky to get some of your money refunded.0 -
