Budget Chromebooks

Is it worth buying a budget (under £200 Chromebook)? or will it be false economy at that price?
What is the min RAM and storage I need to be looking for?
Just wanted for web browsing, forums, on-line shopping and watching You Tube.
Thanks

I just hunted my emails to find the spec of the one i'm using - I have an Acer chromebook, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage. I've had it since Nov 2015 so it's coming up for four years old soon, and it cost £174.
I use it for browsing t'internet (all evening as my MSE login times would embarrassingly provearound 10 tabs open at any time), and for writing letters via either Googledocs or online Word, which I then print at work (shush!) Occasionally I use Googlesheets. I have had to purchase some Drive space for storage of files and photos.
I've been very impressed by my Chromebook, and it's kinda a surprise that it's coming up for its fourth birthday soon, it certainly doesn't feel like old technology.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

This is much better; https://mcscom.co.uk/product/dell-latitude-3480-i3-7100u-2-40ghz-8gb-128gb-ssd-14-fhd-win-10-pro-1yr-rtb-wty-mll591/
A Full HD screen and a much better spec all round. More RAM, more storage and on budget.
Plus a full one year warranty.0 -
I bought one from Argos @ eBay for £65 delivered. Catalogue return but it was brand new.0

But its WINDOWS. Poster wants a simple Chromebook!
4GB ram and 32GB is fine on a chromebook

But the right answer isn't always to the question asked.0

Don't write nonsense. I have a twelve year old laptop with it's original battery still being used.
Chromebooks are often just cheap rubbish. Cheapest processors, cheapest storage, often just an soldered-in SD card for storage. Cheapest low resolution screens.
The reasoning behind it, is supposedly because they only have to power a relatively lightweight operating system.
In that case, one could simply re-purpose a ten year old laptop and install a version of Linux to it.
No need to spend £200 for such an under-powered device.
Always scaremongering in order to make a Chromebook look a sound proposition...
I'd much rather have a proper laptop with an excellent spec, on which I can run Windows, Linux or Chromium, than an under-powered and overpriced toy.
The difference is that the DELL is a £500 to £600 laptop with a full warranty, whereas that Chromebook has just cheap and nasty components within.
Why not link to a Chromebook that you think is suitable?0 -

So they are asking is it worth it and my answer is no, it is not.
She is likely get a cheap and nasty under-powered piece of...kit.
Much better to get a fast and versatile laptop in excellent condition, rather than to tie herself down to a cheap, under-powered device, for much the same price.0 -
I would rather buy a second hand laptop...0

I don't really mind what I get as long as it is under budget. I was looking at Chromebooks as they are cheap(er)0 -
I’ve recently bought a refurb hp chrome book 14 for the in laws as they preferred our chromebook, compared to their windows laptop (their usage is very similar as yours- they like the simplicity, low maintenance and the fact that it is quicker, even compared to windows on a well specced ssd laptop for your type of usage). XSonly we’re doing quite a good deal for around £120. Perfect condition. Quite impressed. Screen isn’t amazing but perfectly adequate. Touchpad and aesthetics i.e slimness and design, are excellent for the price. Battery lasts for ages as well0
