How do I set file associations in Windows 10?

My php files seem to be associated with Internet Explorer, which isn't capable of displaying them. I'd be happy for them to open with Notepad++. So I found this article https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-change-file-associations-in-windows-2624477 which claims the easy steps it provides will take less than five minutes to fix the problem. Unfortunately this is not the case. I only get a load of Microsoft programs to choose from. How can I select a program from my file system?

so
right click on a php file and click "open with"
choose "more apps"
scroll to the bottom and choose "look for another app on this PC" (in blue text)
An explorer window will open and you can navigate the exe of your choice0 -
As above.
Windows 10 does make it less intuitive to find than it was previously though.0 -

Thanks, the "look for another app" option should have appeared when I went down the original route, but it didn't.0 -
Yeah - its all about m$ trying to guide you to using more m$ stuff these days ..
It annoys me when I go to set a default browser that isn't edge or default email app that isn't 'mail' and you get the 'are you sure - edge is awesome'' bumf and have to click the little "switch anyway" thing grrrr0 -
…..
and then even more annoying when W10 decides :-
'there was a problem with your default app so it has been switched back to mail'
NO MICROSOFT - there is no problem with the app I chose0 -
You can set default programs from the settings menu.
Click start and start typing default, default apps should appear as the top option. Open this up and the first screen gives you an overview of the most common types such as email and internet. Further down the page there are options to go to menus allowing you to set default apps by file type, protocol and just by app.0 -

None of which would solve the OP's problems. How can I select a program from my file system?0 -
^^ No way to select a program from file system using any of those methods0

Are you sure? If it gives an option to select a default program based on file extension (.php in the OP's case) then that would achieve what the OP is looking for.
I'll admit that I'm on a W7 laptop at the moment so I can't check exactly what W10 shows, but if it shows as per what Chomeur states then it should work.
Doing it directly from the file is far quicker though.0
