    yes - Im sure

You do get the option to select an app based on file extension using the other methods - but this is not an exhaustive list of what's available on the PC.
And as some programs are not 'installed' such as Notepad++ then they will not appear in this list , so you have to browse for the exe using the method that I have outlined above

Of course if the OP wants to open .php using notepad then they could of course start a command prompt (cmd) as an administrator the enter this

    assoc .php=txtfile

    (or assoc .php3=txtfile)
then they can right click on it and open with then select more apps and then search on this PC

If they wanted to use notepad, they could just use the normal method as outlined in post #7 or in fact the OP its-self , as illustrated by the post above mine here ..

However, if they want to have the choice to choose an exe on their computer (notepad++ for example) and not a m$ 'approved' app, then the way I have indicated is the only way to do it

Doesn't let you choose a program from the file system unfortunately

Another issue with Microsoft - Word is always freezing for 15-20 seconds as I type. So I have given up with that and am using notepad++ instead for most things.

OK, I did this. It now seems that the freezes are less frequent (although not gone entirely). But every time now that I start up my PC, Malware bytes closes Chrome (I have it as a start up program) and wants to quarantine the same files:

    PUP.Optional.ASK, C:\USERS\Chomeur\APPDATA\LOCAL\GOOGLE\CHROME\USER DATA\Default\Web Data, Replaced, [2], [454829],1.0.11968
    PUP.Optional.ASK, C:\USERS\Chomeur\APPDATA\LOCAL\GOOGLE\CHROME\USER DATA\Default\Sync Data\SyncData.sqlite3, Replaced, [2], [454829],1.0.11968
    PUP.Optional.ASK, C:\USERS\Chomeur\APPDATA\LOCAL\GOOGLE\CHROME\USER DATA\Default\Web Data, Replaced, [2], [454829],1.0.11968
    PUP.Optional.Delta, C:\USERS\Chomeur\APPDATA\LOCAL\GOOGLE\CHROME\USER DATA\Default\Web Data, Replaced, [304], [455070],1.0.11968
    PUP.Optional.Delta, C:\USERS\Chomeur\APPDATA\LOCAL\GOOGLE\CHROME\USER DATA\Default\Sync Data\SyncData.sqlite3, Replaced, [304], [455070],1.0.11968

No, I'd rather just go back to the applications freezing (which as I say hasn't stopped altogether).

If Malware bytes wants to quarantine things it should keep them in quarantine and not require me to do it every day. Plus it blocks my favourite travel photography website ("Due to Trojan"), although I've never had any problems with it before, and is now asking me to pay for all this.
