Like a poster above, I've been to Rovinj on the Istrain peninsula. I really liked it. Stayed in a cheap, basic apartment but enjoyed the chilled-out atmosphere. Made a day-trip to Pula, which has a fantastic Roman Amphitheatre.

Anybody been there? What's the country like as a tourist from personal experience? Thanks
I really liked it and want to go back. saw Dubrovnik, Split, one or two of the islands and the Plitvice Lakes National Park which I recommend. Also did a day boat trip to one of the smaller uninhabited Islands where we were given a simple lunch of local fish with bread and wine and explored the Island. Can't comment on current costs because I went in 2002.

Planned to visit Dubrovnik and Split. Only for 1 week, is it easy to find budget or mid range accommodation nothing fancy just a bed to sleep. It will be mid August so peak season. Going to travel very light with only a very small backpack to carry on the plane. Are mozzies a problem? Are ATM and wifi easily available? Is it advisable to take some euros or pounds in notes? I usually use ATM to withdraw local currency. Thanks

Euros are accepted everywhere in Dubrovnik, but last summer we found Split was different. We did find some bars that took euros, but they gave a poor exchange rate, and gave change in local currency.
Both cities are beautiful, but as has been said, Dubrovnik is often packed with cruise passengers.

There were some signs up in shops in Dubrovnik saying no euros but they were the minority and my friend used euros to pay without issue. I had no problems with mozzies in June - there were a few but not many. ATMs were fine, restaurants had free wifi as did my apartment. Our accommodation was booked in advance.
Where in Dubrovnik were you thinking of staying? There seemed to be lots of rooms in the old town, but it would be too hot and crowded for me in August. Cavtat (or similar) and get the bus or boat in for the day would be my suggestion.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
