The "chain" isn't a legal concept, in Scotland or England. You have a contract with the immediate other party you're buying and/or selling with. OP....if you need a short term switch, try Octopus, they have no minimum term or exit fees.
You can always take your tariff with you when you move anyway

I've been researching Octopus and that's who our seller is currently set up with, so setting up when we move in would be super easy. When I spoke to them , they said it would be much simpler to just get it set up in the new place rather than reconfigure....but now I don't know.
The main one is Virgin. Our £34 a month for everything ends on Sept 6th, and then will be £70+ a month :eek: possibly more. New area doesn't have Virgin, so can't switch it. If it was for definite 2 months it wouldn't bother me, but you know0 -

That's all very well and good, but that's the terminology everyone has been using. A chain may may not be a legal concept, but that's what it is if my seller needs my money before she can move and so on..0 -

How much is the property that you are purchasing? If an extra £70 is going to break the bank then you're in no position to buy anything in the first place and this should be the least of your worries...0 -

I'm not worried about our vendor individually, the stress is due to the person at the top of the chain, buying a new build suggesting a date which everyone else has agreed on, and then going radio silent.
We are in rented, and could technically wait longer - but we need to renew / cancel contracts this month for utilities so it could potentially cost us a lot to be in limbo.
They are not for you to worry about, but what they should be doing, if their new place is delayed, is moving in with relatives or friends and storing their stuff, not trying to delay several other sales/purchases.0 -

I can recommend Octopus, we are with them. Not the absolute cheapest, but great service.
Is it broadband you need? You can get pretty good PAYG stuff from 3, or their "Home broadband"
Just remembered, if you want to go with Octopus, I can refer you and both you and we will get a £50 credit to our accounts.

Em, it won't break the bank, and I was planning on paying it short term, but why would I happily pay double indefinitely for the same service? I agree. Despite my forum-based anxiety , I'm hopeful that when reality kicks in, this is what will happen. Fingers crossed

I think it's pretty understandable that the vendor wants to make one move, not two, seeing as he/she now has found something to buy. It's usual to exchange contracts around 4 weeks before completion, ie mid September. So, it sounds like nobody else in the chain apart from the OP is too fussed about exchanging now.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
