Car Stereo Problem

I must admit that this is nothing major, but it's irritating. My car stereo won't store any stations. If I tune my stations in (e.g. Station 1 = Radio 1; Station 2 = TalkSport, etc.) they work fine until I switch the engine off, then the stereo loses all memory of them. Therefore each time I start the car I've got to find the station I want before setting off.

It's only a minor thing, but it's something I'd like to fix. Has anybody else had a problem like this? Is it likely to be a faulty stereo or something more minor like a dodgy fuse?

If anyone with some technical knowledge can throw some light I would be greatly appreciative so that I can listen to my favourite stations without p!ssing about with the tuning for five minutes before every journey!

Ta in advance

Rich

Silly question I know but once you have found the station you are storing it by pressing and holding in one of the numbers ?

Yes, for example I'll tune to 99.5 FM for Radio One and hold down button 1. Then I can tune away from 99.5 FM and if I press button 1 it returns to it. However, the radio 'forgets' the station after being switched off. Once it's switched back on again 99.5 stores the default station (85 I think).

    Cheers

You probably need to swap the wires that are swappable. Can't remember the colours but both should have fuses on, and are usually easy to swap. One is contant live, one ignition positive. What it looks like is happening is your wires are mixed up, so you have the ignition positive as the normal positive, you turn off the ignition and all power to the unit goes so it is unable to remember the stations.

My lad had this with a JVC unit in his Corsa, it was, as anewman said, a case of swapping 2 wires over. It seems to be a common thing in Vauxhall/Opels and some Renaults, their looms must be slightly different from all the others. There was a diagram in the installation instructions, if you dont have these a google search should find them online.
  • as harveybobbles said, you dont have a permanent live feed to the unit.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Greatly appreciated. I'll have a bash at pulling the radio out over the weekend to try and get the thing to work.

    Cheers

Can confirm that GM cars that the red and yellow wires swap, if this a JVC unit the wiring will incorporate push fittings to change these over.
