Unknown CCJ in Dads name, on MY Experian Credit Report

I've just looked at my credit score for the first time before applying for a credit building card, as I have never had any kind of credit before and I know that having no credit can be as bad as having bad credit.

Everything about my report looks right, except that I notice there is a CCJ from Northampton County Court in my dads name on there, which is worsening my score. Obviously I have had nothing to do with this debt and was never held responsible for paying it. I put it down to sharing the same address as I know if you are financially linked, the other persons file/score is linked to yours. However, I have never taken out any financial product or shared a bank account etc with my dad, only shared the address.

It seems unfair that I am being penalised. I've taken a look around but am a little confused: is there a way to remove this from MY credit score, as its being lowered unfairly. We are not sure what this CCJ is for and there is no date or any other details listed/associated with it on the report, so it's not even like I know how long I have to wait until it is removed.

With thanks
Luke

  • How do you know it’s your dads?
Do you have the same names?

CCJ’s are linked to an individual and are not shared across linked financials credit reports.

So how are you linked to your dad financially?

Your score isn’t a factor used in lending so don’t worry about it being low, high or anywhere in between.

You didn't view your score, your report is what you viewed.

Have you checked the other agencies, if its only on 1 agency its just 1 to speak to about it.

What was your score before hand ?

Maybe contact the agency and tell them its an incorrect entry, maybe get your dad to speak to the court and ask them to remove. Try the credit ref agency first and see what they say, they may well say to speak to the court.

    Thanks (so far) all.

I have the same middle name as my dad (whose name the CCJ is listed in), could this be a factor in linking us (potentially incorrectly)?

This is the first time viewing my report and score (via MSE Credit Club). I believe this is through Experian, which is the only report I have viewed so far.

I had something similar on my Equifax report years ago.

One of my dads credit card accounts was showing on my report. Given that the account status was "deceased" and the account was opened when I was about 9 you'd think something would red flag it on their end but it still got posted onto my report. I never challenged it (I had no problems getting credit or a job in financial services) so I just left it and it eventually dropped off.

I'd challenge a CCJ entry though.
  • No you’re only financially linked if you have joint financial products (back accounts, mortgages etc.).

Raise a dispute with Experian if you’re certain the CCJ isn’t yours and check your other credit files with Equifax and TransUnion - if it’s also listed there you’ll need to raise it with them too.

An awful lot of private parking ticket CCJs originate from Northampton - Is there any chance your dad might have had/ignored one post 2012, or not updated the Keeper details for any vehicle registered in his name, particularly the address?

If so, maybe have a look in the Parking Tickets subforum and particularly the Newbies Sticky, to inform yourself about how these predators operate and see what it says about how to go-about a set aside if this is still a possibility.

There's no need to do this, the OP doesn't have a CCJ against them and wouldn't be able to get their dads CCJ set aside anyway for obvious reasons.

Just raise a dispute with the CRAs OP.

@OP - As above, the CCJ should not be on your file unless you are financially linked (ie. hold a joint credit product) with your father and the account defaulted - in this situation you would be jointly liable for the debt so the CCJ would be valid. Sharing the same address does NOT financially link you with another person automatically. Instead this sounds more to me that this information has been incorrectly assigned to your report due to the similarities of your name and address. You will need to contact the CRAs and formally complain, asking them to remove the factually incorrect information from your report - highlight that you a different person (you may be asked to provide identification to prove this) and it should be removed. Avoid making any applications for credit until this has been completed, and you have confirmation in the form of new reports where the CCJ has been removed.

Does the CCJ list the first name middle name and surname, or just middle name and surname? Are you first names similar e.g. Jack & John.

Definitely raise it with the CRA, need to check all three and raise it with them. If they try and fob you off you need to formally complain. They will tell you you need to contact the company involved, that's incorrect. The courts publish the CCJ in the Trust Register and the CRA take the info from there. It is likely that a company has reported a link to the CRA (e.g. believing you are the same person), but if the CCJ is not in your name as its not yours but your dads, then it should not be on your credit report. This is assuming you don't have joint financial products, like mortgage.

    Hi Luke,

I have just posted about the same problem. I have noticed a CCJ on my credit file that has now been confirmed as my Mum’s so I’ll follow this thread and hopefully get some answers too!

First thing monday morning speak to the agency where the issue has been reported.
    As mentioned check the others.
