Virgin Atlantic Rewards

I took out a Virgin credit card in March enticed by their offer, advertised on this site, of 5,000 air miles for using the card and a further 5,000 if you spent more than £1K in 90 days. I met the spending criteria but they are refusing to honour the deal. They had already credited me with the first 5,000 as soon as I used the card but say the offer was not valid when I took out the card. I sent them a screen print of the offer and explained I used the link on this site to apply. Has anyone else had this problem? I am determined not to let it go. Is this a trading standards issue or one for the FSA? Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

  • Normally their bonus offers show a timeframe during which its running. If you have proof that your application was made during the advertised timeframe then they don't have an argument.

On a side note I had the Reward+ card and got 15k miles. Shortly after they ran a better offer with a bonus 10k miles. I enquired about that but was told I was not eligible as applied prior to the new promotion start date.
  • Many thanks for your response. I sent a screen shot of the ad on this site with details of the offer plus confimation of the date applied. Now heard from them saying they will take up to 8 weeks to come back. No rush then! I will keep on until it is resolved. Interesting no-one else has responded here to say they have had a similar problem.

What date did you apply, or more importantly, what date did they open your account?

Thats the important issues. The offer had small print surrounding dates from memory.
  • Hi, I’ve got the same problem. I took out the card where you pay £160 a year, and had to spend £3k in the first three months, which I did. I took this out in April.
I’ve been chasing them for the additional points and was told that I would have them on my next statement several times.
Spoke with them today and they told me that I was not eligible for the deal as it started in June and only ran till the end of July!!!
I don’t have a screenshot, as wasn’t that wise! Are you able to share this?
    Many thanks,
    James
  • Hi James. Have replied via MSE with the screenshot (wouldn't attach here) - not sure it is the same offer as you have a different card from me but hope it helps. If it doesn't come through let me know. Will post any progress - if and when Virgin decide to respond!

  • James, I have tried to attach the image here in several ways but no joy and can't get an email through to MSE to attach to the post. If you want to send me an email address I will gladly send it to you. Sorry. It only proves that the offer was advertised through this site.

If Virgin want proof of the dates during which the ad ran I wonder if MSE can provide that? If MSE want a copy of my screenshot can someone there let me have an email address to send it to please?

The very useful Wayback Machine that preserves archive copies of web pages shows that MSE listed a VA offer during February that involved "5,000 when you first spend, plus 5,000 if you apply by 28 February and spend £1,000 within 90 days"

    http://web.archive.org/web/20190227072525/https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/airline-credit-cards/

However, it didn't apply during March, when the offer reverted to just the standard 5,000 miles that it is now:

Ultimately it's the offer on their own site that counts, rather than what's shown on a third party sites (which are obviously outside VA's control), so they'll only be bound by screenshots of their own pages, not those on MSE.

For the guy who paid £160 a year to get the flying miles, I would be tempted to call Virgin asking for the miles to be added immediately or I will put in a section 75 claim as I've paid £160 and not received what I was promised if I met the spend limits.

I took out the free card 3-4 months ago and received 5000 plus 7000 miles on first purchase and by reaching £1000 within 90 days.

There’s no grounds for S.75 here.
The annual fee is not part of the welcome bonus.

I took out the zero fee card too. Did the £1k spent, hopefully should see the 7k miles on the 3rd statement
