I have been charged £60 by Eon for leaving them ( gas and elec supply)
Are they allowed to do that, I thought the idea was to encourage people to use the best traffis and the old methods of trying to force people to stay had stopped

    Or am I wrong?

Hello andrew28 and sorry to lose you.

Already some great advice on here - thanks all. As others have said, if you were on a contracted product with exit fees, we'll make a charge if you switched to another supplier outside of the renewal period.

The renewal period opens 49 calendar days before the tariff end date and closes 20 working days after. Provided we're told, customers changing supplier during this period stay on the cheaper prices whilst the switch goes through and any exit fees are waived. We send letters to advise when the renewal period starts. If you changed supplier before this time, any exit fees included in the tariff T&Cs will be charged on the final bill.

We tell customers if exit fees apply on the communications we send when they agree a relevant tariff and they're also mentioned in the T&Cs (section 11.2 usually). Not all our tariffs have exit fees so it's worth checking.

We don't charge any exit fees when moving from one of our tariffs to another.

Hope this explains andrew28. Let me know if you need more information as happy to help.
