I have been charged £60 by Eon for leaving them ( gas and elec supply)
Are they allowed to do that, I thought the idea was to encourage people to use the best traffis and the old methods of trying to force people to stay had stopped

Or am I wrong?

  • Probably a condition of the contract you signed with them. Do check.

No, you are absolutely correct. No supplier is permitted to charge you simply for switching from them to a different supplier ... unless, of course, you previously agreed they could. Did you?

Presumably not. In which case have you contacted the supplier and questioned the additional cost? Might just be a simple billing error. Nobody's perfect all of the time.

Eons 'Fix Online v25' has a £60 charge if you leave before the contract is up, they normally only enforce 11 months of a 12 month contract.

I very much doubt the OP was ever on that tariff ;)

This is what the Which? site says about switching

    "Switching energy suppliers step-by-step

Before switching, check whether you'll incur a fee for cancelling your current energy deal. Exit fees are common with fixed rate tariffs if you switch early. The good news is that all suppliers should now allow you to leave up to 49 days ahead of your tariff's end date without incurring a penalty."

So if you've just switched without checking your contract T&C's then you are quite likely to get stung with an early termination fee if you have done it more than 49 days before your contract end date. Most companies charge £30 a service (= £60 for both gas and leccy), some even more.

Quite possibly. Depends if you were on a tariff that had early cancelation fees? You are the only one that can look at what you agreed to.

OP - have a look at your latest bill - that will give details of exit fees .
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Many tariffs have an early exit fee if you break your contract .
Its not a method of forcing you to stay .
Just the lawfull valid fixed term contract you signed up to .

Unless the OP is in the last 49 days of a contract, usually signalled when the supplier sends you a letter informing you your tariff is ending, then it does sound like early exit fees - £60 dual fuel, £30 on each seems the standard.

Hopefully the OP comes back to clarify or say what their tariff was and the original term.

Anyone know if ‘exit fees’ are subject to additional VAT?... or is it already included?
