Very basic advice needed please!

Don't laugh but I have a very basic question and would appreciate some advice!
I currently have a very basic Samsung Galaxy Fame and pay the grand sum of £5 a month for all the calls, texts and data I need. I'm a very low user. My issue is that the handset is very small and I'd like to get a new one - have seen a Galaxy J3 for under £100 which seems a good bet.
My question is - can I use my existing SIM in a new handset such as this and not use up a lot more data than I currently use? I did borrow a handset a couple of years ago and put this same SIM in it, and was rather alarmed to find that I was using more data - when I tried to find out why, the answer seemed to be that this handset was running pre-installed apps like Facebook (which I never use on my phone, I have an iPad for most of my online usage).
Does this make sense? In a nutshell, I want to buy a new handset but keep my existing SIM at the same low cost - is this possible? Any advice gratefully received - thank you.

Yes it is possible.
You need to not allow apps to run in the background, which is a setting you can change.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0 -

Thanks! Is that easy to do? Would it come under the usual Settings menu?0 -
I don't have an Android phone so don't know the specifics but in general it is fairly easy and I am sure there are a multitude of videos that will show you how to do it.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0

You may need to check the size of the sim you are using. I think the Fame uses a standard size sim whereas the J3 uses a macro size sim. Unless its a very old sim most sims are made so that you can push out the macro sim from the standard one and even the very small nano sim that is used in many phones today.
see this youtube video.

If its not a push out sim then a phone shop should be able to swap you over to a macro sim.0 -
Which J3 are you referring to?0

Yes it's probably the apps that are sucking up the data. In a new phone you can choose not to install them or change when they use the data under settings.
I'm having a nightmare at the moment with my iphone and the cloud, it's using all my monthly data to redownload images so I am running out a week into my plan!0 -
Turn data off and turn on when needed .
Use wifi as the main data supplier.0 -
It should also be possible to turn off automatic app. updates and/or select update using only wifi in Google Playstore settings.
As mentioned in previous post. "Use wifi as the main data supplier."0 -
Thanks everyone for your very helpful replies. I'm sure it should be easy enough really but it just seems such a faff to turn things on and off - I'm just aiming to get the new phone, uninstall everything except the things I actually use, and keep them uninstalled!
I'm reasonably tech savvy with my iPad as I use it all the time, but I'm not a big mobile user so this is a learning curve. I might have to ask around locally to get someone to actually show me in person what I'm supposed to do!
Thanks again.0
