Private Plate when buying
Options
Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a new car and transfer a a private plate onto it before driving it away? The plate is currently on retention with me and the car is waiting to be paid for and picked up at a dealer. I've transferred plates lots of times but have always done it on a vehicle I already have. The MSE content is I want to avoid paying my insurance company an admin fee to change the number

Is it a new or used car?
You should follow the advice laid out here: https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/keep-or-assign0 -
Used. Thanks, but I've read, understood and previously followed, all the DVLA guidance. I was asking whether anyone had any practical experience of doing this in advance of driving the car away.0

You can only do it once you have a V5 in your name for the new to you car. There is no way around this.0 -
^^^ is the correct answer0

I recently purchased a car from the dealer and transferred my number plate onto it about a week after picking the car up. Admiral did not charge an admin fee so it might be worth checking that yours will.0

Or do what I'm doing, and rub the neighbours noses in the dirt with the 69 plate on the drive until your insurance needs renewal. Renew it with the private plate for no admin charge, swap the plates and enjoy dateless motoring (keep the '69 plates safe to go back on when you sell it).I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Only works if your neighbours are too dim to work out that a 69 plate hasn't been issued yetI need to think of something new here...0

I haven't found a way round it. Currently waiting for the V5 for my new (to me) car so I can put my personal reg on it. I've been waiting a week for the log book and getting frustrated!0

I assumed the OP was getting the car in 2 days time, and would get a 69 plate- I appear to be still living in the 20th century when the change was August 1st:o:o
My "new" 'bike is a 19 plate, when the insurance is up for renewal in April I'll transfer my plate to it. The admin fees with my "cheap" insurer are out of all proportion to what it must cost them to effect a change.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

This seems to depend on the insurance company. I don't recall having to pay an admin charge to change plates with Admiral or Direct Line.0
