Avatars help please

Hi, new to the forums and not finding it intuitive so I guess two questions please.
1) it says my avatar should be 80x80 but what does that mean? Is that pixels, file size or some other size. Couldn't work it out by trial and error.
2) Is there a list of Forums and sub forums? I was reading the forum on gardening stuff.
I really enjoy the threads but would like to take part. It's already taken me the best part of an hour just to get a new password and change it and I've run out of patience trying to sort things out so would be really grateful for someone to help me make a start.

The instruction does say pixels and an alternate file size.

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 32.0 KB (whichever is smaller).

The Forum index is reached from any page on the whole site by clicking on the word 'Forum'.

Finding your way round is half the fun and it also helps you to remember how you did things.

Thank you Duncan. But I'm not a man or dog so struggling.
In the same way that I know my regular site really well and can't see how people don;t get the layout. One change of site and you become a baby again. Everyone should try it. It's an eyeopener.
I've still to work out what the little envelopes are at the side of the forums or posts. Nothing comes up when I hover or click.
And yes, I did visit the Site Introduction........it told me what forums were!
