I really can't understand the FO stance on this.....should there be a collective thread about lost santander accounts? Can anyone else advise how this can be taken forward or is that it?

Why on earth wouldn't you use an account for more than 15 yearS?

Sorry to tell you but you have no chance with any Abbey account if it has had no activity for more than 6 years.

I have just lost my case (and over £100) with the Ombudsman for an Abbey account from 2000. Because Santander are not legally obliged to keep records for more than 6 years they have written off all accounts falling into that category.

Nice little earner for them. :(

If someone has a debt with Abbey account from 2000 is the remaining money still repayable to Santander?

Loads of people leave accounts just gathering interest for years, as a nest egg. Interest payments don't count as transactions and therefore wouldn't stop an account from going dormant, and therefore classed as 'unclaimed assets'.

Hi, I have the same problem with Santander/Abbey. I have two accounts with a total of almost £2000 plus accrued interest. I have the passbooks and all my old passbooks and statements, Santander refused to consider my case as they had been 'dormant' for over 15 years
I then took my case to the Ombudsman, who decided to uphold Santander's argument that I had 'closed' the accounts, I had never received and correspondence from them concerning my two accounts and they had no proof that my accounts were closed just that they couldn't find any 'record' therefore they'd been closed.
I should also point out that I've been a customer of Abbey/Santander for over 30 years and they didn't even have my correct date of birth! I had corrected this on one account but my cheque account, which was older, was completely wrong.
I am now trying to decide where to go for help as I live in France so finding a lawyer is not going to be easy.

A fiver from 1976 probably earning 0.1% gross, we're looking at an approximate balance of £6.61

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it
  • Why isn't the passbook classed as a record. We too are in the same position. My father-in law has recently been diagnosed with Dementia and we have power of attorney. We have found some old passbooks that he set up in the grand children's names but they are over 6 years old.... why is it that Banks can decide they don't owe the money? Isnt that the reason we give them the money in the first place to look after it. My father in law would be devastated if he knew the money he had saved for his Grand children was lost and would have been better hiding it under his matress!! We are not talking £000's here but its the principle surely!!

In my dreams: back in 2001 I requested a duplicate of my Abbey National passbook (at the time with £xxxxx balance) and kept the original one. The following week (with the new passbook) I withdrew all the money....

    .....I wait 12 years.....

in 2013 I go back to the bank which doesn't keep records over 6 year and with the "lost" passbook I claim "my" £xxxxx.

Not a surprise it's not evidence.

Passbooks are not proof of anything anymore.

You can close or withdraw money from a passbook account with alternative ID without the passbook itself being present.
