Experience of buying a Jelson home?

We have seen a Jelson house for sale that we are really interested in. The issue I have is that the Jelson main office, in Leicester, and the site the house is situated at have terrible reviews. Google has it at 2.8 out of 5. Most reviews are around the customer service and quality of the house, some having fundamental problems.
Can anyone share their honest experience with Jelson homes?
Or just any advice please?

Not all new build homes are the same. Some builders specialise in building cheaper new build houses in cheap areas. They buy the land cheaper because the area is not where most people would want to live and then they build new houses that are also cheaper because if they were the normal price for a new build they wouldn't sell them.

So what you have to work out is if these homes are cheaper for what they are than you would have expected in a much nicer area. If they are you then have to work out how much second hand homes in that area sell for because once you live in a new house and it is not new anymore when you come to sell it the price for it will be around the same as it would be if it was an older home.

My feeling about the builders who build in cheap areas is that they are looking for buyers who just want to buy new and need to feel that they are getting a better house than they would if they bought 2nd hand in the same area. The builder doesn't care if their houses drop a lot in value due to the area they are in. New houses in not nice areas that people try to avoid buying in have the potential to devalue quite significantly when they are no longer new. This doesn't matter if you are hoping to stay for many years and don't mind living in a not very good area. It only matters if you want to sell in less than about 10 years.
  • We own a Jelson home. They met expected date for completion, no delays. No major snagging issues. All brick walls, including upstairs.

Carpets and turf included. We also had an alarm included.

Can't fault them to be honest, but not sure if standards have gone downhill since we bought ours. Our purchase was in 2015.
  • We found the house we liked in Feb 2019 and used Jelson's part exchange deal for our old house. The part exchange was a really easy process. Jelson set a completion date of 30th May which we told our solicitor that we had already planned to go away that weekend but Jelson weren't interested and that date was set in stone.

We viewed the house many times and no progress was being made to make it ready for us. After one of our very first visits we reported that a pipe was leaking in the cloakroom, this only got fixed a couple of weeks before we moved in but as it was left for months it hasn’t done the skirting board any favours.

The knowledge of the onsite sales office was very poor, the majority of our questions at the time had to be relayed back to head office but then we wouldn't hear anything. Two weeks before we were due to move there was still no flooring or kitchen appliances fitted. We also spotted a leak from the towel radiator in the en suite. We passed on our concerns to the sales office onsite who again passed it onto head office.

Our introduction to the house was arranged with Neil the day before we were due to move. So we took time off work and as we arrived outside our new home there were carpet fitters inside and an internal door on the path outside. Neil asked us if we minded coming back the following day but we informed him that that was our moving day which Jelson didn't want to move months ago. So the introduction took place walking over half laid carpets and lino and a carpet fitter wanting to screed the hallway floor. It was shocking but as we were due to move the following day, whatever we could of said or done wouldn't of made any difference to Jelson.

Moving day -  Unsurprisingly the house was dirty and unfinished. A new floor had been fitted in the en suite with the towel radiator still dripping meaning we had a plumber out until 6pm that evening.

We have had all sorts of issues including a gas leak from the cooker which I was informed by an East Goscote engineer that it was the new radiators warming up!

Most of the house has had to be resealed in the bathrooms, around most windows and where the lino flooring meets the skirting as it is lifting already and very dirty.

PVC windows are damaged and really draughty (made by Jelson).

Stanley blade found in the grass on moving in day evening with children playing in bare feet. No response from Jelson.

We have a long list of snagging issues (minor and major), we are still waiting for some nearly a year from moving in.

Mice in our loft and internal walls. Jelson just put a hand written note through the door telling us to contact rentokill. We have had to throw away a lot of belongings from the loft as it was either damaged by mice or covered in mice droppings. The site manager said he had been around the house to look for mice entry points but this wouldn’t of been possible as our back gate was locked.

We sent our completed snagging form back within a month and got a confirmation letter stating that snagging works will usually be completed within 8 weeks. We had a visit from a plumber and a electrician after about 6 weeks then after about 2.5 months I contacted Amanda to see what the hold up was, Amanda replied saying that she had passed it onto someone else? 12 weeks pass and the snagging team arrive and work through most of the list that they can. The team said I should hear from someone in a couple of weeks for an update on the rest of the list. It’s now week 17 and I haven’t heard from Jelsons. I appreciate we are in lockdown now but if Jelson had kept to their timeframes that they enforce their customers do then all of the snagging works would have been complete pre lockdown.

A tarmac company turned up out of the blue to finish the driveway, we had no notice about this from Jelson.

We love the location of our new home and we have plenty of room for us all and parking isn’t an issue but there is no quality control and very poor communication in the company.

Our house is nowhere near a reflection on the show home we viewed and going by the state of our house I can’t see how Jelson have been ‘building quality homes for 130 years.’

I was living in an area where Jelson started building hundreds (if not thousands) of homes 60 years ago and continued for another 20 or so. Even then there were snagging problems which had the site foremen been on the ball shouldn't have occurred.

130 yrs building homes, yes. Quality? Well they are still standing..........

I'm very disappointed to find out we're only talking about a generic newbuild. I was hoping for...

  • I bought a jelson home and I'm literally kicking myself. The quality of aftercare is absolutely shocking.  2 years plus after moving and our 6month snagging is still unfinished. My ensuite smells like severn treat water 💩and we have dangerous black mould growing under our sink and all around our windows. The finish of paint work is remarkably low and woodwork shoddy. The only good thing is the location, and thats nothing to do with jelson ! We have to fund all works ourselves now as NJ ( customer care manager ...should be renamed as couldntcareless manager ) has dismissed everything we mention. He's not interested. No 1 is ...other than getting your money. Then, as soon as they have...you are dead to them.
