Need some advice - Car Insurance

Just passed my test today (:D)
The plan all along has been for me to use my mum and dads second car, a clio, 2 years old.
Now, my mums only recently got the insurance on this car in her own name after been on my dads since she passed 18 years ago. She just rang up to see how much it was gonna be for me to go on hers, 2 grand and it would mean her cancelling the insurance she has now and the company don't insure young drivers (i'm 18).
Has anyone got any ideas what we can do? Obviously can only have one insurance on the car. I got a quote from a different company for 1700 though and that was in my own name.
I'm stuck. I could get a cheap car myself but I really don't want to do that, you just don't know what you're gonna end up with, plus my parent's clio is hardly used anyway.
I really don't know what to do. I wanna get out driving straight away but this is turning out to be a pain in the bum

Ok, you have a few options open to you. As it is your parents car, you can only be classed as a 'named driver' on their policy, you cannot take your own insurance policy out for a car that does not belong to you i.e. you are not listed as the 'registered owner & keeper'. If you were to do this, & you made a claim in which the insurance company found out you were not the owner, the claim would not be paid. This is a common problem in the insurance industry at present & is referred to as fronting.
Shop around, contact some brokers who will shop around on your behalf. They need to look for a policy that allows you to be added as a named driver, you should be able to find a more reasonable policy. Just because your parents insurers don't insure young drivers, that doesn't mean others won't - but it will obviously mean your parents having to move their policy.
Other than that, the other option is to buy a cheaper car & take out your own policy. When I passed my test at 17, I bought a 1.2 Renualt 5 & my fully comp insurance on that was £300 a year - admittedly that was 10 years ago, but that was through a small broker.
Ring round, look on the net - there will be something cheaper out there for you.0 -
Try Diamond - they were the cheapest for me!Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.0

Please stop giving wrong advice. Refer to another thread you have posted on for the right advice.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

Rubbish, I used contract hire vehicles for years, they are owned by and registered with the hire company, but by the terms of the contract I had to arrange my own insurance as the the main driver and my spouse was a named driver.0 -
Fourthed (?)
Its about who drives it mainly rather than who owns itBaby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
You could try www.confused.com
I tend to use it to get an idea of whats cheap.
Gives a whole list of insurance prices from loads of suppliers0 -
Perhaps I have explained myself wrongly, what i meant was that there are alot of problems at the moment where young drivers are saying that they are the 'main user' of a vehicle, when it in fact belongs to their parents & they are the 'main user', in order to get cheaper insurance - this is not allowed & this is fact not 'incorrect advice'. Simply trying to help someone out so they don't get themselves in a pickle come claim time.....thanks for your rudeness. though.0
