Were they ceiling mounted (external) or ceiling flush spotlights?

Flush mounted. Like the ones you see in bathrooms.

    Flush mounted.

That's the type I had considered (11cm diameter).

We've stayed in a hotel that had reading lamps attached to the headboard that were metal (silver/chrome) and flexible. If you can't attach them to your headboard could you attach them to the wall behind. Do you want the lights especially for reading or for aesthetics too.

    For reading.

The reason I had considered spots flush within the ceiling was because I had thought it would be a cleaner look without lamps sitting about (which are not always the prettiest things to look at and collect dust).

Can't tell you what size they were. I just lie in bed admiring our freshly plastered and painted ceiling, I don't wish to remember the horrible wallpapered ceiling and spotlights!

There were also wall mounted reading lamps on either side of the bed which we had removed. It limited where you could put the bed, and they weren't where we would have wanted them. The only thing we kept was the ceiling pull cord which now turns off the central pendant lamp if we've forgotten to turn it off by the door before getting into bed.

Have you thought about trying to find lamps that will clip on your headboard?

Here's some but these are detachable and not the best to look at. I was thinking of something similar but that was a permanent fixture, maybe attached next to or behind the headboard. Google flexible headboard light for some ideas, there's lots of choice.
