It's your lack of understanding of the product that is being pointed out, not your belief that you can haggle with easyJet call centre salespeople, although that might be an interesting discussion too.
Ryanair can often be so cheap that it is usually no big deal if you simply lose a flight -viz the weekend in question their return fare was less than half the easyjet price.
When comparing prices it's worth remembering that there is no charge for hand luggage and booking a seat with easyJet Plus, which no doubt you have if you're a Flight Club member. These can add £30+ to a Ryanair booking.
Ryanair Choice launches in the autumn to compete with easyJet Plus. It's a similar price, £199pa, but the benefits don't look as exhaustive. It includes seat selection, priority boarding etc but doesn't have a price promise to give a credit refund after a price drop.
