Car insurance Cheapest always the best option?

Car insurance is up in a couple of days and just been doing the standard searches

After a phone call to my insurer ( Tesco ) got it down from 580 to 530

but the comparison sites come up with two cheaper options - Quote me happy £430 - General Accident £440 .

The issue is that both are online services only and the reviews are not great for either if you have to make a claim .

For the sake of a £100 is it worth sticking to what I know or taking a risk on one of the other two ?.

Read the paperwork carefully and ignore generally bad reviews at your peril. To an extent, you get what you pay for.

I generally avoid the cheapest after having a bad experience with Direct Line. Cheapest is great until you actually need to claim.
  • Most reviews are bad. If you review Tesco they are bad. You just have to avoid the very bad.

GA has been around for decades, and is now part of Aviva, the biggest insurer in the UK.

Aviva don't feature on comparison sites, for that they have the GA brand. I've switched between the two on numerous occasions, cover has been the same.

Quotemehappy are also Aviva by another name.

When speaking with Tesco did you tell them the prices you had been given elsewhere, and ask them to beat/match?
  • I've been with Aviva for years (They are £100 cheaper tan the nearest competitor) and had a couple of non fault claims which were handled excellently (although I did have to stipulate my cars went to my franchised dealer for repair rather than their own recommended).
Although they are another brand of Aviva Quotemehappy have some awful reviews which has led to me always avoiding them.

Its all in the small print - read policys for each insurer then make your choice.

It's not 'all in the small print'. You won't find things like:

"We don't answer the phone" and

"We're very slow to deal with claims"

You get what you pay for. Cheap insurance is fine providing you don't ever need to call on it. Have an accident or need to make any policy changes and you will soon regret going for the cheapest option.
