Money Moral Dilemma: Should I tell my employer my annual leave wasn't deducted?

    I honestly despair of most of these 'moral' conundrums (a bit of me hopes they are made up tbh): this is NOT a moral dilemma it is a straightforward choice to be honest and decent or not--if you would not steal from a shelf in a shop then you do not steal- time, money or effort- online, in cyberspace or on pay cheque/bank/cafe/from your friends or employer...

    I have worked in the public and the private sector during my career and wherever it was, it was known as annual leave. In any case, whatever you call it, you do have to tell your employer. This is paid leave you are receiving so it is fraud to expect to take it twice. And in purely self-interest, when found out you could be dismissed and the company refuse to write you a reference for a future job which would be massively damaging long-term, far greater monetarily than the value of your paid holiday.

    Mistakes happen. If your employer underpaid you one month and you didn't realise it, but subsequently he did, what would you want him/her to do? Do to others what you would want them to do to you!

    And I have to say, those boasting about being cheats are coming across far more than a little bit “council.”

    Could you quote some examples of posts where people are 'boasting' about having done this?

    By all means, don't tell your employer, BUT stand by for instant dismissal when your colleagues "drop you in it"! That will mean forfeiting any pension you might have built up and no chance of getting a decent reference from him when you apply for other jobs.

    My employer is huge, so maybe payroll mistakes are a little less likely to be uncovered.
    I was paid too much in error and I advised my employer, who took it back - over 3 months, standard.
    But instead of taking it back, they gave it to me again.
    I told them again.

    The employer would have to make a number of assumptions, first of them being that the employee was aware of the discrepancy, I know from how my online HR system works you can apply for leave without actually seeing how many days you have left. You have to click an '+Expand' button to be shown it.

    I generally have an idea of what leave I have, when I have plenty, when I have not too many days left. If at the start of the leave year I am applying for leave there is absolutely no reason for me to hit the expand button given that it's a clunky system and takes a long time to load.

    If the system was to glitch, and not take the day off me, I could very possibly not be aware of it and even more important, I could genuinely argue that I was unaware even if I was aware and the employer would have no way to disprove that. I have the right to believe that the HR system operates correctly and that I don't need to audit myself to ensure that it is doing so.
