    Surely MSE could replace many of these so-called Moral Dilemmas with a general question: "Should I commit fraud, or not?", and that would save a significant amount of unnecessary typing.

    Untill they take more holidays than their allowance they have done nothing wrong.

    I find it worrying that you should find the need to consult others about a matter such as this.

    Unless your employer has an adequate audit system in place, it's doubtful whether the mistake will be picked up, but that's surely beside the point, isn't it?

    The plain fact is that to take advantage of the error is downright dishonest, particularly if your employer treats you well, so think carefully about your next move. Keeping quiet could jeopardize your chances of promotion to a responsible position if your employer later discovers what you did, and your silence might be extra grounds of dismissal if there's something else you've kept quiet about or your performance is unsatisfactory.

    In his/her shoes, I'd pass you over in favour of someone with integrity I could trust.

    I am sorry but I am an honest person and I would let the employer know. If you don't then you may well find that the error is discovered later and will be deducted from next year's leave. But worse than that is that you will have gained the reputation of someone who is dishonest and untrustworthy. Your 'good name' is something that is truly worth keeping.

    "Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
    Is the immediate jewel of their souls.
    Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
    'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
    But he that filches from me my good name
    Robs me of that which not enriches him,
    And makes me poor indeed.

    Playing devil's advocate my take on this is, can you really live with the guilt of the upheaval you will cause?

    If you confess, then HR will have to audit all of the other leave requests that have been made throughout the company to see if this has happened to any others. This will put extra work on HR. Do you really want to annoy the people responsible for processing your leave request?

    You may have picked up on your discrepancy but that does not mean that others were so vigilant. Do you really want to put your innocent co-workers under suspicion just because they weren't quite as vigilant as you?

    Better for everybody to suffer the agony of taking those extra days than be 'that person' who cause so much disruption.

    Sorry but what else do you call it if it isn’t leave. The last time I heard it called holiday was probably 20+ years ago ...... vacation is very much an American term.
    In the airline industry it's known as annual leave and many I know in other industries use that term too.

    Don't know what part of the country you live but I regularly talk to people from all over the country and have only heard the term holiday and not leave unless I'm talking to forces or merchant lads

    And civil/public servants.

    Have never been in this position but my thoughts, honestly, are that I would say nothing and just continue using my leave as and when I wanted. That's assuming that it wasn't a significant number of days.

    Anything more than a couple of days and I would probably inform them because it would have a more significant impact on either future years leave or my pay packet if and/when it was discovered.

    That said, my first ever pay from my current employer was £900+ too much because they gave me a tax rebate, but I had never been taxed enough to build up such a rebate. I twice told them they had overpaid me and it was only after the second time that they investigated it properly and I wrote them a cheque for the exact amount. So what I think I might do, and what I have actually done in the past differ slightly.

    Of course I’d tell them. I spend my days trying to improve the company, why would I cheat them?

    And I have to say, those boasting about being cheats are coming across far more than a little bit “council.”
