Recently my sister opened her car door, picked up her shopping to put inside the car and the wind slammed the door shut and for some reason, the central locking activated, with the keys now locked inside. She has no idea why the locks activated. Meanwhile her spare was with her son who had borrowed the car at the weekend and omitted to return the key.

She phoned Britannia Rescue (she has top package) who told her that keys locked in the car are not covered. Their agent would try to recover them but if not they would call a locksmith who would charge. They said there was currently around a two hour delay for agents in her area. Fortunately she was able to contact her son who came out to rescue her with the spares, but it seems that vehicle recovery services do not cover locked in car keys.

Are there any that do? And are there any other exclusions common to vehicle recovery services?.

Yes it would seem they do going by most of the replies ?
Handy to know I guess as these things can (and do) happen, as I did not know myself I did wonder if I should just post something like idiot / self inflicted wound / buffoon etc.
You know just to make you wish that you had never asked the question in the first place ?

Breakdown services cover breakdowns not acts of stupidity.

It appears you are incorrect. No matter how intelligent we think we are, we all do stupid things sometimes, even YOU.

My wife's uncle locked his keys in his car and the AA came out and got him back into his car. I've locked mine in the boot of my last car. AA wouldn't have been able to get in. So the Mercedes warranty and breakdown cover came and did free of charge because I kept my servicing with main dealer.

The negative judgement isn't required. It is easy to do if you have a newer car that will open the boot only and not unlock the whole car. Once you close the boot , it then re locks as the car's default is locked.

So if you are collecting shopping and put the keys down whilst loading or unloading and then close the boot door, the keys end up locked in the boot.

    Oh to be perfect.

AA have covered me for locked keys in the car.

Recently my son broke my dads car door lock, jammed the mechanism so the door wouldn't shut  I was panicking at the potential bill but Dad called AA and they fixed it as part of the cover (said it was quite a common call out). I don't know how much my dad pays for his cover but I was quite impressed and relieved.

That's exactly how it happened in my case.
