I believe that the common denominator here is TalkTalk who will not release the number like other providers do in time for Now to complete the transfer, therefore so that they do not lose the new contract, Now have no option than to allocate a new number that TalkTalk have no control over.

Many people have transferred from other non TalkTalk related providers and I have only seen this problem where TalkTalk is involved i.e. Post Office is simply a reseller of TalkTalk and there will be several other companies that TalkTalk have swallowed up over the years.

    Another shameful TalkTalk tactic!

Not true at all as I posted further up.

I switched from Sky (NowTV's parent company) to NowTV themselves and was told I couldn't take the number with us. The number itself originated with BT who I had before Sky.

Who did the number originally belong to?

I know many who have switched from Sky and BT to Now and kept their number.

My bother changed from BT to Sky and recently to Now without losing his number and this is the norm and what should happen.

I switched from Plusnet to NOW TV for broadband and landline and kept my number - no problem.

So did I but had to place the order twice as they decided to cancel the first order as I was switching from Virgin.

The real problem started when I requested a home move as they cancelled all of my services without telling me and refused to let me transfer my old number.

But there were lot of other problems, such as being incorrectly overcharged, my phone number was changed without notifying me and that took a week to rectify, BB keeps dropping out, rubbish landline, have to reset the box multiple times each day, the list goes on.

I would avoid Now TV at all costs. Service is rubbish and customer service is worse as their advisers don't care and don't even pretend to care.

Best of luck to anyone planning to move to them.

    :D

From BT>Sky but not to NowTV.

We'd had the number for 15 years though and the cold calls (even with blocking) were a pain so changing numbers was actually a blessing.

I switched from Sky to NowTV broadband and was told the same (Sky own NowTV). No idea why, but the cold calls have totally disappeared so there is a silver lining.

If you were "told you couldn't take your number" does that mean that you did not complete your application to transfer to Now online?

Everyone who I know applied to switch online, got cashback currently £80, were informed that their number would remain the same and were given the option to be listed in the directory, is that the difference?

There was no verbal contact, only emails confirming the full order details and the date that the switch would take place.

I think that the OP's title is a bit misleading if it is only number transfers from certain provides e.g. TalkTalk that don't happen for some reason.

It is certainly not normal for transfers from BT or Sky to be allocated a new number.

    Ofcom regulates number portability https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-telecoms-and-internet/information-for-industry/numbering/number-portability-info
Powers to enable Ofcom to set conditions requiring communications providers to provide number portability are set out in sections 51 and 58 of the Communications Act 2003 (the "Act").

Ofcom sets out the rules which communications providers must follow when customers request to take their landline or mobile number(s) with them when changing provider in General Condition (PDF, 810.1 KB) B3 ("Number Portability") .

Ofcom has powers to enforce any breach of that Condition under sections 94 to 103 of the Act. Civil liability for breach of that Condition could also arise, but Ofcom must first give a consent for the bringing of such civil proceedings under section 104 of the Act.

I was transferring from Post Office, ticked box online to say I wanted to keep my number. Received several emails, then received an email saying this is your new phone number. Contacted them to say I had requested to keep my number. They said 'Who are you with now? We can't transfer numbers from the Post Office'.

They then gave me the option to cancel.

My phone number was originally a BT number before I moved to the Post Office.

I was told the same before I switched from EE to NOW but it turned out that their was no problem keeping my original number which started out with BT then SKY then EE.
