Is it possible to cancel a contract and keep the number but not allocate it to another phone ie park it?

I'm in the middle of changing providers but will be abroad for a few months so don't want to take on another 'contract' till I get back.
Any ideas?

Or get the lowest price 30 day SIM card (think it's £4 at the moment) and port
