Car Rental Northern Ireland

Be aware of cross border charges. These must be unlawful?
Most rental companies charge you at the desk and sneakily ask where you are travelling to and try to decipher if you are crossing the border into Southern Ireland.Usually an extra charge per day, they say for insurance purposes!
Any advise fellow MSEs?

Seems to be standard practice in Northern Ireland. Just like Spanish rentals charge to cross border into France.

They have to charge Cross Border fee it’s not a case of just adding extra charges and the rental agents make nothing from this kind of charge.

It’s to register your car with the breakdown company incase of issues.

A lot of breakdown companies cover the whole of Ireland as standard for cars registered in NI.


There is no additional charges vice versa for collecting a car in Dublin and taking it cross border (I did this recently and specifically asked if it as OK to drive in NI)

That maybe the case but unlikely the one they are using. I say this from experience of working at 3 of the main hire car companies.

Does anyone know which companies don't charge this fee? I have a suspicion Hertz don't, but trying to find info on their website is impossible.
